Standard application procedure
In general, only regular students at Saarland University can be given accommodation. Students, who have exceeded the maximum funding period for their course will only be given accommodation in exceptional circumstances - i.e. in cases of hardship or if the application is already sitting final exams.
Apply on the homepage via the application for admission. Please submit your CV and passport photo. You must provide your certificate of matriculation when signing the rental contract.
If you are coming to Saarbrücken as an exchange student within the Erasmus programme you are entitled to apply for a room via the International Office. After your official nomination, you will receive the application form for these rooms from the International Office's Erasmus team.
For the winter semester: 30 June
For the summer semester: 15 January
Please note: there is no guarantee for a room. If the number of applications exceeds the number of rooms available, the International Office will not be able to accommodate every student. If you receive notification that the IO is unable to offer you a room, you will need to look for suitable accommodation in the private sector housing market.
The rooms are assigned on a first come first served basis. Applications that are handed in after the deadline cannot be taken into account. The rental contracts have fixed dates, this means, you have to rent them for the periods of time that are mentioned on the application, generally at least six months. Rooms in the dormitories of the Studentenwerk can only be rented for one semester (exceptions depend on the mobility programme). If you want to stay for two semesters or longer, it is recommended to look for a room on the private market.
Exchange students within the Overseas Programmes
For exchange students of the Overseas Programme accommodation is guaranteed, as long as the students come for one or two full semesters. Please fill in the application form and return it to the International Office. On the basis of this application, you will receive an offer for a room.
For the winter semester: 15 July
For the summer semester: 15 December
Please find more information on accommodation options on the website of the Welcome Centre.
Students coming to Saarbrücken to study as a free mover may apply to the International Office for a room in a student hall of residence. However, these rooms are usually reserved for students coming to study at Saarland University as part of an exchange programme. A room will only be allocated to you if rooms are still available after accommodating the exchange students. Please fill in the application form and return it to the International Office. The International Office will contact you if rooms are available.
Accommodation will be allocated according to a waiting list. It is therefore advisable to submit your application as soon as possible.
