The housing complex "Gustav-Radbruch-Haus" has a very central location close to Hamburg University of Applied Sciences at the Berliner Tor and about five minutes away from the underground railway and urban railway station .
There are a total of 516 places available in group accommodation for two to eight persons. Rooms are 10-15 square metres in size and furnished. Some of the 2- apartments are preferentially rented to couples and single parents with a child.
The apartments have one or two sanitary facilities depending on the size, and a fully equipped kitchen. All rooms have internet, telephone and cable TV connection.

Rent deposit

The required deposit is calculated as follows:
monthly rents up to 300 EUR = 300 EUR deposit
monthly rents up to 400 EUR = 400 EUR deposit
monthly rents up to 600 EUR = 600 EUR deposit
monthly rents up to 800 EUR = 800 EUR deposit

Guests do not pay a deposit, but a key security deposit of 50 EUR is payable as well as a final cleaning charge of 25 EUR if necessary.

Shared facilities

The house has a tea room and a bar, run by the residents themselves. A room for diverse internal activities is also available. The student self-administration (SV) offers various work groups, e.g. pottery, video, photo, wood workshop, bike. A music practice room with a piano can also be used.
Parking bays for cars and motorbikes in the underground car park or outside can be rented out through the property manager. Bike parking bays are also available, as are coin-operated washing machines.

What are the conditions?
- You are an international student/freemover
- You want to organise your international studies already from your home country
- You pay our security deposit as well as three monthly rents in advance
- The minimum rental period is 6 month – the contract cannot be terminated prior to this period

The number of Service Packages is limited and they will be issued based on the order of the bookings. There are no more Service Packages available for the winter semester 2019/2020.

Special deals for students with children / families

Some of the 2-apartments are preferentially rented to couples and single parents with a child.

The Studierendenwerk Hamburg operates five day care centres and has many years of experience in child day-care. Educational specialists at all establishments look after children to assist families, giving them security and promoting well-rounded development. Please find more Information here.

Additional information

Short-term rental rooms with a higher price and additional services are offered to students needing a room for less than six months. These are allocated by the Zentrale Kurzzeitvermietung.

Standard application procedure

Application requirements

Admission is granted to German and international students who are enrolled at one of the universities in Hamburg, as well as students attending the Hamburg Conservatorium in Blankenese and a preparatory course at the Studienkolleg (individuals, couples and families).

Application deadline

Applications can be sent in at the earliest three months before your chosen date for moving in.


You can fill in the application form online. Online application for admission You can also pick up the application form from the information centre for accommodation (Info-Zentrum Wohnen) or print it out. Please send the completed form together with a photograph to the Studierendenwerk Hamburg, Von-Melle-Park 2, 20146 Hamburg, Germany.

Please note: The online application for admission does not apply to exchange/programme students. Please contact your coordinator at your home university.

Erasmus or central exchange students

It is strongly recommended to apply for one of the rooms set aside for Erasmus and central exchange students in the student dormitories as it is very difficult to find affordable housing in Hamburg on your own. Please contact your programme coordinator in Hamburg and request a housing application form.

Please note that as an exchange student, you may not apply directly to Studierendenwerk Hamburg for a dorm room. Please also note that the deadline for Erasmus and central exchange student housing offers is approximately three to four months before the semester starts.

Additional information

You can apply for up to three buildings or for all buildings together. If you apply for all buildings, you will increase your chances of quickly receiving accommodation.
