DAAD research grants provide Iranian doctoral candidates with an opportunity to carry out research in Germany. The grants also promote the exchange of experience and networking amongst colleagues. This scholarship programme is financed by the German and Iranian governments.

Who can apply?

Excellently-qualified doctoral candidates who were nominated by the Students Affairs Organization (Sazeman-e Omoor-e Daneshjooyan) of the Ministry of Science and Research and Technology (MSRT). Please apply at the Sazeman-e Omoor-e Daneshjooyan prior to your DAAD application.

What can be funded?

A research project at a state or state-recognised institution of higher education or a non-university research institute in Germany, which is being carried out in coordination with an academic adviser in Germany and in Iran.

Duration of the funding

  • 2 months by the DAAD, 4 months by the MSRT; the length of the grant is decided by a selection committee and depends on the project in question and the applicant's work schedule.
  • The grant is non-renewable.


DAAD scholarship merits:

  • 2 Monthly payments of 1,000- Euros (up to and including August 2018) respectively 1,200- Euros (from September 2018 onwards)
  • Payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance cover for the complete duration of the stay in Germany
  • Travel allowance for the journey to Germany and back to Iran
  • A German course accompanying the studies possible in the first two months of your stay in Germany (maximum costs 1,000- Euros)


An independent selection committee consisting of specialist scientists reviews the applications.
The most important selection criteria are:

  • a convincing and well-planned research Project
  • academic achievements
Additional documents that prove academic suitability or provide information about extracurricular activities will also be considered in the assessment.

What requirements must be met?

  • Candidates should be nominated from the MSRT at the time of the application
  • Master´s degree (or equivalent) at the time of application. As a rule, applicants should not have graduated any longer than six years before the application deadline. Candidates should not have started their doctoral degree any longer than three years previously.
  • Applicants who have been resident in Germany for longer than 15 months at the application deadline cannot be considered.

Language skills

The required language level depends on the applicant's study plans and subject: Good German language skills and/ or English must be proven by supporting documents (see application documents).

Application documents
Certificates, proof of credits, certifications and translations may be scanned in non-certified form and uploaded to the DAAD portal. DAAD's Head Office in Bonn will only request certified copies of the submitted documents in paper form if a grant is awarded!

1. Documents to be uploaded to the DAAD portal:

  • Document of nomination from MSRT
  • Online application form
  • Full curriculum vitae in tabular form (max. 3 pages)
  • List of publications (max. 10 pages), if applicable
  • Extensive and detailed description of the research proposal which has been agreed upon with the academic adviser and a description of previous research work (max. 10 pages), if applicable
  • Schedule of planned research work in Germany
  • Letter of Motivation
  • Letter confirming (co)-supervision by an academic adviser/supervirsor in Germany, which refers to the applicant's proposal and confirms that the host institute will provide a workplace
  • An expert opinion from the Iranian Supervisor
  • Proof of admission to a doctoral programme at the home University
  • All university certificates on all annual examinations with individual grade(s) incl. explanation of grading system.
  • University degree certificate indicating final grade(s): the certificate must be subsequently submitted before the grant-supported research begins if it is not available at the time of application
  • Copy of school-leaving certificate which entitles holders to study at a university in the home country (with all individual grades)
  • Applicants need to present a TOEFL score (minimum 550) / or IELTS test (minimum Band 6.5.) resp. DaF test (not older than 2 years)
  • German or English translations of documents submitted in the national language
  • Copy of passport
    Other documents which support your application (example: certificates of employment, proof of placements, etc.)
2. To be submitted by mail or personally::
  • The "Application summary", which is generated in the portal in PDF format and which can be printed out after the online application procedure is completed; please send 1 copy to the application address;
  • One recent reference from a university teacher which provides information about your qualifications; please enclose one copy of the reference in a sealed envelope with each copy of your application.

The application procedure occurs online through the DAAD Portal. You are also required to send a printout of the "Application summary" (PDF file), which is generated in the DAAD portal after the online application procedure has been completed, and other appendices by mail to the application address or submit them personally.
Please note that the "Submitting an application" tab in the scholarship database only appears while the current application period is running. After the application deadline has expired, the portal for this programme is not available until the next application period.

The access to the DAAD portal opens about 6 weeks before the application deadline.

Please note

Your application is only valid if you submit all the required documents to the DAAD portal (see Item 1) and by post (see Item 2). The postmark date serves as proof that the application has been dispatched on time.
The DAAD portal closes at 24.00 hrs. Central European Time (CET) on the last application day.
Late or incomplete applications cannot be considered. Applicants are responsible for ensuring that their applications are complete.
The application documents remain with the DAAD. Data relating to applicants is saved by the DAAD in accordance with the Federal Data Protection Act insofar as this data is needed to process the application.

General information on the application via DAAD portal

You can access the DAAD portal by clicking "Application portal" at the end of the page. Here you will find an online application form in which you can enter your application data.

This is what you have to do:

1. Register in the DAAD portal (Read notes about registering in the portal >>)

2. Request references (if necessary according to the call for proposals, see "Application procedure")
The form, which has to be completed by a referee, has to be generated in the DAAD portal in the section "Request reference" after registration and downloaded. Please send the form by e-mail to your referee and ask for the completed reference form to be returned to you in a sealed envelope. References are confidential and should not be read by the applicant. The unopened envelope should be enclosed with the printed "Application summary" generated in the portal (see Item 4). Please note: If the call for proposals requires you to send several copies of your application by post to the application address (see "Application documents" in the section "Application procedure"), you will also need several copies of your reference in several envelopes, which you must then enclose with your printed "Application summary".

3. Applying online in the DAAD portal (Read notes on applying in the portal >>)

  • Download and complete the online application form
  • Prepare application documents
  • If necessary, translate documents (unless they are already in German or English).
  • Scan paper documents (except references) and save in PDF format. Please note that you can only upload PDF files to the portal.
  • Upload the completed application form and the required appendices (except references and any work samples which you might have to submit) to the portal in PDF format. Translations, if applicable, should be uploaded together with the document issued in the original language.
  • Submit the uploaded application documents online.

4. Sending application documents by post
Submit the printed "Application summary" – if necessary with several copies (see "Application procedure/Application documents") by post. Please do not enclose any other documents that have not been uploaded to the portal with the printed "Application summary" – except the required references (in sealed envelopes) and a work sample if applicable!
