Programme Description

The scholarships enable particularly gifted students, doctoral candidates and junior researchers of German language and literature studies to come to the Institute of German Philology at the Würzburg university for the purpose of education and (further) training. Candidates from specific countries in Central and East Europe are eligible to apply. The funding includes short stays, study periods of 1 year, 1-to-2-year post-graduate programmes, (doctoral and post-doctoral) research projects. The monthly grant amounts vary depending on the sponsorship purpose. The non-material support entails close mentoring during the courses and/or research projects as well as social events as part of the Institute of German Philology's programme for guest students.

Target Group

highly qualified students of the German language and literature from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine

Academic Requirements

Depending on the purpose; usually at least a Bachelor's degree is required.

on average about 30 scholarships per year

Scholarship Value

The amount of the grant depends on the purpose. It ranges from 875 EUR for a short stay to 2,225 EUR for a post-doctoral research project.

Application Deadline

Applications must be received by the examination and coordination office at the latest by 1 December of the year preceding the stay.

Application Requirements

  • interest in the German language, literature and culture with the purpose of enhancing one's knowledge and skills in the field of German studies
  • interest to promote and strengthen interest in the German language, literature and culture in the home countries in the future
  • desire to study and research at a renowned German institute with very good library conditions
  • interest to get to know life in a beautiful university town at one of Germany's oldest universities
