Candidates are free-spirited junior scientists and scholars from all disciplines with an outstanding record who wish to carry out highly innovative, risk-taking research in projects located at the boundaries of established fields of research. The modular, and therefore flexible, funding offer gives junior researchers with at least one and at most four years of post-doctoral experience - with regard to the date of the defense in relation to the application deadline - a reliable time-line during which they are free to carry out their research. The fellowship, thus, incorporates the possibility to apply for additional components during the funding period, e.g. funding of staff positions, travel expenses etc.

Number of Scholarships
Every year 10 to 15 fellowships are assigned.
The first stage of sponsorship covers five to six years. After positive evaluation and a clear perspective of a permanent position, a second stage of up to three years may follow.
The first stage of sponsorship covers five to six years. Depending on the field of research and the stage of the fellow's career, research projects may be funded up to an overall sum of EUR 1.8 million.

- doctorate has been completed at least one and no more than four years before the application deadline - in relation to the date of the defense
- involvement in a higher-education institution or non-university research facility in Germany upon the start of the fellowship
- switch of the academic environment and location, at the latest upon application, return to the work context of the doctoral stage is only possible in exceptional cases
- period of study abroad, at the latest integrated in the project being applied for
