Programme Description

Up to 120 sponsorships for young graduates from 50 nations are awarded every year by the German Federal Parliament (Deutsche Bundestag). The sponsored students are invited to Berlin for a period of five months. They take part in events and seminars during this time and complete a work placement with a member of the Bundestag.

The aim of the programme is to promote relations between participating countries and Germany, to strengthen democratic will and tolerance, to deepen an understanding of cultural diversity and to safeguard a peaceful living together in the world.

The scholarship is worth a monthly amount of EUR 500 and provides for free accommodation as well as health-, accident- and liability insurances. Moreover, costs for the journey to Berlin and back are reimbursed.

The President of the German Bundestag is the patron of the scholarship, which is awarded by the German Bundestag together with three of Berlin's higher-education institutions: the Freie Universität, the Humboldt Universität and the Technische Universität.

Target Group

The programme is open to highly qualified, open-minded and committed young graduates with a strong interest in politics from the participating countries who are willing to play an active and responsible role in shaping the democratic futures of their countries.

At the moment the following countries participate in the programme: Albania, Algeria, Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Chile, Canada, Colombia, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Estonia, France, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Indonesia, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Latvia, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Morocco, New Zealand, Palestinian Territories, Poland, Romania, the Russian Federation, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine and the United States.

Application Requirements

  • nationality of one of the participating countries
  • higher-education degree
  • very good German language skills (corresponding to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)
  • under 30 years of age at the time of commencement of the sponsorship
  • professional goal: work in the public sector of the home country (media, parties, associations, civil service etc.)
