Description/content

This summer course will deal in detail specifically and exclusively with European systems for the protection of human rights. It will concentrate on an integrated treatment of the various European systems and will specifically examine the roles played by the Council of Europe (the European Convention on Human Rights), the European Union, and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in the protection of human rights. Also, to the extent that it is relevant, it will look at the role of the UN in this area on a universal level. Teaching methods consist of lectures, seminars, and moot courts.

Language requirements

English skills: Participants should be able to understand the main content of complex texts on concrete and abstract topics. They should also be able to understand technical discussions in their own area of ​​expertise. Students should be able to communicate so spontaneously and fluently that a normal conversation with native speakers is easily possible without any great effort on both sides. They should be able to express themselves clearly and in detail on a wide range of topics as well as explain a point of view on a topical issue and state the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
