Description/content

The Master of Science in Information Systems programme equips students with the analytical, technological, and strategic skills needed to drive digital innovation and lead transformation in data-driven organisations worldwide.

The degree programme aims to provide research-based instruction in the field of Information Systems ("Wirtschaftsinformatik") as well as to develop methodological competencies. A key component of the Master’s programme is increasing the students' ability to work independently and to develop the ability to methodically and reflectively assess even novel problem situations. Students acquire the necessary skills for professional work in the field of Information Systems or in academia through in-person teaching, virtual instruction, a high proportion of self-study, and intensive research seminars and projects—both individually and in collaboration with others.

The Master's programme also opens opportunities to address interdisciplinary questions. It is designed to equip students with advanced subject-specific knowledge, skills, and methods in Information Systems, enabling them to take on responsible roles in business, academia, or public administration, and to apply scientific methods and findings to solve technical and economic challenges.

Graduates are expected to acquire the cross-disciplinary key qualifications required for a broad and constantly evolving professional field. They should be able to critically assess, evaluate, and communicate the knowledge they have gained. They are equipped for lifelong learning and teamwork.

Course organisation

The Master’s programme in Information Systems ("Wirtschaftsinformatik") comprises modules from the Master’s programmes in Computer Science, Business Administration, and Economics totalling 120 credit points (CP). These are divided into a compulsory area, a subject-specific elective area, and an interdisciplinary elective area.

The compulsory area comprises a total of 42 CP and includes the following modules:

  • Business Analytics and Data Science (6 CP)
  • Fundamentals of Database Systems (8 CP)
  • Methods and Models of System Design (8 CP).

It also includes the Master's thesis (20 CP).

The subject-specific elective area consists of modules from the relevant offerings of the Department of Computer Science and the Faculty of Business and Economics, totalling 68 CP. Among these modules, the 48 CP from the best graded modules are included in the final grade.

The elective options are as follows:

  • Elective modules in Computer Science and Information Systems (30 CP)
  • Elective modules in Business Administration (12 CP)
  • Elective modules in Economics (6 CP)
  • Elective modules in Quantitative Methods (6 CP)

The remaining 14 CP can be freely distributed among modules from Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Administration, Economics, and Quantitative Methods.

In the interdisciplinary elective area, students must complete modules worth a total of 10 CP, freely chosen from the designated module catalogues of other disciplines or central university units.

The programme is structured in such a way that students can take the elective area in the third semester and fill it with courses from a semester abroad.
