Description/content

Information at your fingertips, mobile computing, Internet of things, multimedia networks – many trends accelerate today's life. They are the driving forces behind the global markets of telecommunication, computer science, and media technology.

The international Master's degree programme in Communication and Media Engineering (CME) is tailored to meet the challenges of the multimedia age. Developed in 1998 by the departments of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology and Media and Information Engineering, it combines essential elements of communication engineering with innovative multimedia issues. The curriculum has been continuously updated to meet modern needs and continues to successfully combine these two fields.

Lectures, lab work, and projects in the CME Master's degree programme cover the various aspects of communication and media engineering and are complemented by software-related and non-technical courses (business management, social skills, languages).

The CME programme has a strong focus on applied engineering. Students gain practical experience, develop and test new algorithms, and become part of one of the research groups in Communication and Media Engineering at Offenburg University.

Course organisation

While instruction is mostly provided in lectures in the first semester, subsequent semesters require active and creative participation. Students should be able to learn and study independently. Many of the lectures are accompanied by laboratories. The laboratories give students the opportunity to immediately apply and deepen their theoretical knowledge.

An essential part of the programme is the project work in the third semester. Students work in intercultural teams and apply the project management methods that they have learned in the classroom.

The fourth semester is reserved for the Master's thesis, which can be prepared at a company or within the university.
An optional internship can be pursued in industry or at Offenburg University.

University location

The friendly and safe town of Offenburg, population 60,000, is at the centre of the beautiful Ortenau region, situated between the Rhine Valley and the Black Forest and characterised by a comfortable climate with warm and pleasant summers and winter temperatures rarely dropping below zero.

With almost 900 years of history, Offenburg offers a historical centre with a baroque scenery, a variety of cultural events, hiking and cycling trails along the Kinzig River and the surrounding vineyards, and typical Baden gastronomy.

Although Offenburg is relatively small, it offers great cultural and recreational possibilities. There are various festivals and festivities throughout the year, including the famous German carnival season, wine festivals in autumn, and very popular Christmas markets.

Offenburg's city centre offers a variety of department stores and speciality shops as well as a farmers' market on Tuesday and Saturday mornings. Inexpensive groceries can be found at the major supermarket chains around town.

Nearby cities include Strasbourg (France), 25 km, capital of the European Union and seat of the European Parliament; Freiburg, 65 km; Karlsruhe, 75 km; Heidelberg, 110 km; Basel (Switzerland), 120 km; Stuttgart, 140 km; and Frankfurt, 200 km.

Offenburg is close (35/50/130 km) to the international airports of Strasbourg, Karlsruhe, and Basel-Mulhouse, which are mainly served by low-cost carriers (easyJet and Ryanair, among others). The main German airport hub in Frankfurt can be reached by high-speed train in around 90 minutes.
