Description/content

Our MSc programme provides broad geoscientific knowledge that focuses on the science behind the ecology, economics, and environmentally responsible and sustainable use of the Earth's georesources, with particular emphasis on water, raw materials, and energy. A theoretical background and extensive experience is provided in the field, in the laboratory, and in digital data processing. This provides the necessary training for professional employment. A large variety of teaching units (modules) allows students to develop their own fields of interest. Conceptualisation of scientific and applied problems as well as critical evaluation of results will enhance the students' understanding of sustainable management of our Earth, its environment, and its extractable georesources. We offer the flexibility and mobility necessary in today's fast-changing job market. Our broad curriculum strives to keep in touch with current issues in geoscientific research and technology as well as the environmental challenges of our developing society.

Course organisation

Our Earth Sciences Master's programme has three lines of specialisation. The international programme, which is held in English, focuses on "Georesources and the Environment" and consists of five core modules that define this field of specialisation. Additional supplementary modules can be selected individually to enhance the student's scope of interest. The Master's programme also includes a "personal profiling" module and a "literature discussion and thesis proposal" module to help students develop soft skills prior to finishing the Master's thesis. The other lines of specialisation possible within the framework of our Earth Sciences Master's programme, namely "Geology" and "Quaternary Science", take place either in German or in English.

Integrated study abroad unit(s)

It is strongly recommended that students complete three "mobility modules" during a semester at another university abroad. Specific courses at internationally esteemed universities can be taken, provided the courses comprise geoscientific and environmental aspects and conclude with an evaluated examination.

Greifswald University uses specialised DAAD programmes (German Academic Exchange Foundation) to support student exchanges, especially to South East Asia.

Possibility of finding part-time employment

Students from countries outside the EU or EEA can work for four months per year (120 days full-time or 240 days part-time) without a work permit. Although Greifswald is a small city, there are some part-time jobs for students in the service sector (e.g. as a waiter/waitress or a language teacher) or at the university as a student assistant. For job opportunities, please refer to the following website: https://www.uni-greifswald.de/en/university/information/jobs/

Accommodation

In order to make moving to Greifswald easy, students enrolled at the university may take advantage of single or double rooms or choose individual apartments available within the six student residences managed by the "Studierendenwerk" (Student Services). Accommodation is also available for those with mobility impairments.

Private apartments are available throughout the town with a wide variety of prices, sizes, and locations. Many students find living together in a “WG” (shared flat) to be an ideal arrangement since they can share the expenses for heating, electricity, Internet, etc.

The university, at which students from more than 90 countries are presently registered, was founded in 1456 and is one of the oldest universities in Germany. Today, there are approx. 250 professors and 10,300 students, which is quite special (allowing close personal contact between teachers and students). There are plenty of sports facilities in and around Greifswald. With regard to its academic life, it has been said that there are towns all over the world that have a university, but in Greifswald, a university has a town.

University location

Greifswald is a lovely, youthful town just a few metres above sea level (population of about 60,000). It is situated amidst a beautiful natural landscape and lies just three kilometres from the Baltic Sea. It has good connections to the nearby islands of Usedom and Rügen (which are said to have Germany's loveliest beaches) and is a two-and-a-half-hour train ride away from the German capital, Berlin.

The weather in northern Germany is pleasant but varied. The winter can be harsh, with temperatures of -10 degrees Celsius at times. A cold wind often blows from the Baltic Sea. Still, there is not much snow in winter. Summer temperatures reach 20 to 25 degrees Celsius, or sometimes even more, and statistics show that Western Pomerania, the region around Greifswald, is one of the sunniest regions in Germany.
