The PhD programme involves advanced studies in theoretical and methodological forestry and forest ecology (doctoral seminar, research methods, interdisciplinary topics, key skills, in-depth specialisation).

Course organisation

Within the programme, students focus on their individually proposed PhD projects under the supervision of one of the participating departments (see above). Additionally, students attend seminars, courses, colloquiums, subject-related and/or interdisciplinary lectures and symposia according to their interests. Within this programme, students may also choose to improve key competences such as presentation skills, teaching techniques or project management competences, which are essential for a leading position in research institutions or companies. However, the emphasis of the PhD programme in Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology lies on preparing the PhD dissertation. The scientific work will be supervised by internationally recognised professors and scientists.

Costs of living

Academic admissions requirements include an outstanding Master of Science (MSc) degree or its equivalent in forest or environmental sciences, biology, geography, or a related field.

Possibility of finding part-time employment

Please note that restrictions may apply with your scholarship or visa. Some proficiency in German may be indispensable to find a job. Non-EU students are permitted to work a maximum of 120 full days (240 half days) per year.
