Research of the CMPB programme aims at understanding how molecules, cellular compartments and cell types interact to mediate key events representing brain function, including (i) synapse formation, synaptic function and synaptic plasticity, (ii) neuron-glia interactions, (iii) neuronal development and ageing (iv) neurodegenerative, neurological, and psychiatric diseases, and (v) functional restoration after injury and in disease.
The programme provides cutting-edge training in molecular/cellular neurobiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, large-scale omics approaches, cell staining/imaging, electrophysiology, systems physiology, light and electron microscopy, and super-resolution microscopy. The programme fosters interactions between students to facilitate the exchange of expertise and ideas. The overall goal of these efforts is to understand the molecular underpinnings of cellular function in the healthy brain, in order to elucidate how they change during ageing and in disorders of the brain and to test how functional deficits can be restored.
The programme provides the students with the theoretical and practical expertise to study the molecular, biochemical and physiological events underlying brain function in health and disease.
The doctoral programme in "Cellular and Molecular Physiology of the Brain" is part of the Göttingen Graduate Center for Neurosciences, Biophysics, and Molecular Biosciences (GGNB).
The research-oriented programme is taught in English and open to students who hold a Master's degree (or equivalent) in the biosciences, chemistry, physics, or related fields.

In total, 20 credits are required, and doctoral students can tailor their individual curricula by choosing from all courses and events. Only a seminar on good scientific practice is mandatory.
The doctoral students hold at least three annual Thesis Advisory Committee meetings within the regular PhD time of three years. The maximum duration of PhD studies in GGNB is four years.

Fees are around 400 EUR per semester. The fees include a prepaid semester ticket that entitles students to use regional trains (in Lower Saxony and Bremen) and city buses in Göttingen free of charge. Students of the University of Göttingen receive discounts for cultural events. Meals and drinks are also available at reduced prices at all university canteens.

The average cost of living in Göttingen is modest compared to other major university cities in Germany. Doctoral fellowships are available at approx. 1,200 to 1,500 EUR per month.
Master's degree or equivalent in biosciences, psychology, physics, or a related discipline
Applicants whose native language is not English are asked to submit proof of proficiency in English. If no English test is available, proficiency in English can be evaluated during a personal interview. Proven higher education in English or a reasonably long stay in an English-speaking country may also be accepted.
