The Heidelberg Biosciences International Graduate School (HBIGS) focuses on the highly dynamic research areas which are especially strong in Heidelberg and are at the forefront of biosciences:

  • developmental biology
  • infectious diseases
  • molecular and cellular biology
  • molecular biotechnology and biophysics
  • molecular plant sciences
  • neurosciences
  • structural biology and biochemistry
  • systems biology, bioinformatics, and mathematical biology
  • molecular medicine
Course organisation

PhD students will work independently under the supervision of a principal investigator.
After being accepted for a specific PhD project, students will attend the three-week Core Course.

As members of the graduate school, they will:

  • present and discuss their results with a thesis advisory committee
  • attend additional courses
  • attend lectures with guest scientists
  • discuss their goals and career options with a career development adviser
  • attend summer schools
  • get to know fellow PhD students and principal investigators
  • take part in extramural activities

Costs of living

Living expenses in Heidelberg are estimated at around 550-800 EUR per month, depending on lifestyle. Rent for an apartment off campus will cost approx. 300-500 EUR. For those wishing to live on campus, it is possible to apply for an "all-inclusive service package high-tech plus" offered by student services at approx. 3,650 EUR per year for prospective students. The package covers accommodation, meals, health insurance, public transport, a personal computer and Internet access.

Academic admission requirements

The minimum requirement for admission into the graduate school is a university degree from an internationally accredited university which would allow the applicant to enter a PhD programme in biosciences in the country where the degree was awarded. Depending on the country, this may be a Master's, "Licentiate", or "Diplom" in natural sciences or equivalent.

Language requirements

All candidates must be proficient in English.
For non-native speakers, proficiency must be confirmed by a TOEFL (paper-based: 570+, computer-based: 230+, Internet-based: 90+), IELTS (band 6.5+), or the Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE).
Candidates who took part in an undergraduate programme in which the language of instruction was English are asked to provide a suitable certificate from their faculty.
