Description/content

This degree programme offers you:

  • Best job opportunities through specialisation: You can choose one of three majors before you start your studies and thus build up a clear professional profile. You can choose from the following three future-oriented majors: "Managing Digital Business", "Business Process Management" and "Data Science".
  • Flexibility and interdisciplinary networking: The majors are supplemented by elective courses. They cover the entire spectrum of Information Systems and allow you to choose pure Business Administration or Computer Science courses at the Department of Computer Science. This allows you to further hone your profile or expand it individually.
  • A good start together: With our new orientation module "Information Systems Thinking", we welcome you to the University of Münster. You will get to know your fellow students, find out more about the content and further organisation of the course and gain the confidence that you have chosen the right course of study for yourself with the Master's in Information Systems.
  • A perfect combination of science and practice: In our seminars, you will learn about scientific work at the institute. The topics are newly generated each semester and are therefore always at the cutting edge of research. Our project seminars offer you concrete insights into practice through cooperation with companies and you can make important initial contacts for your career start. Both seminars and project seminars take place in small groups to provide you with individual support.
  • Open doors worldwide: The programme is taught exclusively in English. The third semester can also be used as a mobility window in which you can complete a semester at one of the approx. 75 foreign universities partnering with the School of Business & Economics. You will receive support from the personal advice offered by our school's own International Relations Center.
  • A high level of satisfaction: Whether it's the general study situation, courses offered, practical orientation or the transition to the Master's degree course – our Master's programme receives top ratings in the current CHE ranking. Many criteria are rated as very good or good by more than 90% of our Master's students, e.g. the opportunities for individual subject specialisation, support with questions and problems, digital teaching elements and the ability to present and discuss research results.
Course organisation
  • Versatile positioning: Determine the degree of your specialisation yourself by choosing your courses. With majors and elective courses in Managing Digital Business, Business Process Management and Data Science as well as Information Systems, Business Administration and Computer Science, you can focus on your personal preferences. Seminars and project seminars support you in starting your career and bring current research and practice to life.
  • Attractive offers beyond the curriculum: The University of Münster is home to the European Research Center for Information Systems (ERCIS), the leading network in IS research, which combines practice, research and teaching. The faculty's International Relations Center and Career Development Center advise you on stays abroad and career entry, while the Reach Euregio Start-Up Center promotes innovative start-up ideas.
  • Internationality: Teaching the programme in English and offering the opportunity to undertake a semester abroad supports the internationality of our Master's of Information system. You have the option to complete a voluntary semester abroad at one of out 75+ partner universities spread over various continents.
  • Perfectly fitting: When you enrol, we take into account previous knowledge in the fields of Business Administration, Quantitative Methods, Information Systems and/or Computer Science that is tailored to the respective major. This makes our Master's programme exciting for students of business administration and computer science and at the same time ensures that everyone starts from a comparable level.

The Master's programme consists of a total of 120 credits:

  • an onboarding module: "Information Systems Thinking" (6 credits)
  • a total of six lecture modules (6 credits each) in the chosen major
  • at least four elective courses (6 credits each) from the elective area
  • two seminar modules (6 credits each)
  • one project seminar (12 credits)
  • the Master's thesis (30 credits)

Through your choice of major, you can focus on one of the three perspectives of Information Systems: Data Science, Business Process Management, or Managing Digital Business. The course of study can be planned individually.

Seminars and project seminars are taught in small groups and are concerned with the latest topics in research and practice. Each semester, students are offered a new selection of seminars and project seminars from which to choose. While seminars represent a perfect opportunity for students to train their skills in academic writing, project seminars school students in how to turn a business problem into a solution. In teams, students have to do a full circle from the first idea to a prototypical implementation.

The Master's thesis allows students to demonstrate their ability to undertake an in-depth research project. This thesis completes the programme.
