Description/content

Environmental informatics is understood to be an integrated subject consisting of bio-, eco- and geoinformatics in addition to scientific computing. By using the tools of informatics in this subject, anyone can study or model objects, structures, regulatory networks, or processes (signals, materials and information flows) at various scales and integration levels. Under the umbrella of environmental informatics, the transfer of knowledge about biological, ecological and environmental systems and the system-oriented integration of these will be improved and promoted using up-to-date methods and technology. This important integrative approach at the system level is embedded in the graduate school GAUSS and in the research landscape of Göttingen. The excellent biological, ecosystemic, environmental and mathematical research in Göttingen is reflected in this PhD programme.
Sub-programmes:

  • bioinformatics (computational molecular biology and genetics; including medical/clinical bioinformatics)
  • ecoinformatics (modelling of interacting organisms and computational ecosystem sciences)
  • geoinformatics (geographical information systems, remote sensing and computational geosciences)
  • scientific computing (computational aspects of physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, etc.)
Course organisation

Organisation of studies depends on the chosen sub-programme (bioinformatics, ecoinformatics, geoinformatics or scientific computing) and is rather flexible. Please contact your preferred supervisor from one of these sub-programmes for further information.

In the case of forest science, agriculture or geography, a focus should have been on computer science, mathematics or natural sciences, visible in the curriculum of the previous MSc studies. At least 30 ECTS credits (or an equivalent workload) in mathematics and computer science have to be documented from the BSc- and MSc-level studies. A PhD topic should be chosen and a consent of supervision must be given by a member of the PEI board of supervisors. A thesis committee should be specified.
