Description/content

The goal of HGS MathComp is to support you during your PhD journey by providing an individualised training programme, networking opportunities, and funding schemes.

Located in a vibrant research environment, HGS MathComp provides structured interdisciplinary training for PhD students. The programme supports you in pursuing innovative PhD projects with a strong application-oriented focus, ranging from mathematics, computer science, bio/life sciences, physics, and chemical engineering sciences to cultural heritage. A strong emphasis is placed on the mathematical and computational foundations, encompassing theoretical underpinnings and computational abstraction and conception.

Your membership in a graduate school is independent of your PhD project, which is tied to your supervisor or research group. For most of our PhD fellows, membership in a graduate school is optional. Only a few PhD programmes at Heidelberg University require it. This depends on the faculty to which you apply.

The information provided in this entry applies only to HGS MathComp. Please also refer to your doctoral degree regulations ("Promotionsordnung"). Organisational support for PhD students is provided by the Graduate Academy at Heidelberg University.

Course organisation

Thematically, our training programme consists of three main areas:

  • Key Competences
  • Theory & Methods
  • Practicals & Schools

Most of the courses are on site, but some are online or self-paced, such as MOOCs. You are free to choose courses from our calendar, and courses taken outside of our programme can be credited. ECTS credits are awarded based on the duration and workload of a course. Teaching units range from short lectures and talks to compact courses or workshops lasting up to five days.

We recommend that you earn 18 ECTS during your PhD phase.
