Description/content

The Faculty of Law of Hamburg's University is offering a Master’s degree programme that focuses explicitly on German law in the German language for law graduates who obtained their degrees abroad. This degree programme is spread over two semesters, and it allows students to study German law and its methods through individual specialisation and comparative law elements.

The Master of Laws in German Law (LLM) degree programme is aimed at lawyers who already have completed a Bachelor's or Master’s degree with at least 240 ECTS credits in another jurisdiction.

The degree programme consists of three study phases. The first phase consists of compulsory introductory modules (10 ECTS). In the second phase, students must successfully complete a required elective area (35 ECTS credits) chosen from five areas of concentration (Civil Law, Labour and Social Law, Commercial Law, Public Law or Criminal Law). The Master’s thesis (15 ECTS credits) is completed in the third phase.

Possibility of finding part-time employment

Students who enrol in a full-time programme will generally have only a limited time for part-time jobs. As a rule, students who hold a student residence permit may work for up to 120 full days or 240 half days per year. Further information on work regulations for international students at Universität Hamburg is available at the Department of International Affairs (https://www.uni-hamburg.de/en/internationales/studierende/incoming/studium-mit-abschluss.html) and at the Counselling Centre for Study Financing (https://www.studierendenwerk-hamburg.de/en/counselling/counselling-centre-for-study-financing-best).

Accommodation

Accommodation is available through the "Studierendenwerk" (student services) or on the private market. The "Studierendenwerk" provides rooms in halls of residence, most of which are single rooms with shared kitchens and showers/WCs. We strongly advise students and researchers to arrange accommodation prior to arriving in Hamburg, as demand for affordable accommodation is sometimes larger than supply.
For more information on how to find accommodation and how to plan your first steps in Hamburg, please see: https://www.uni-hamburg.de/piasta/beratung/doc/willkommen.pdf.
