Description/content

The "Molecular Life Sciences" programme includes research-oriented courses focusing on molecular genetics, developmental biology and cell biology across eukaryotic kingdoms (plants, animals, fungi) and selected prokaryotes. This is an interdisciplinary degree characterised by a significant amount of practicals and independent project work. Key competencies developed throughout the programme include the independent design and execution of scientific studies, alongside the documentation and presentation of research findings both orally and in writing.

The degree is structured into a two-semester foundational phase and a one-year individual practical phase:

  • Three basic modules on molecular developmental biology, molecular genetics and molecular cell biology
  • Three advanced modules (out of more than 15 elective modules offered)
  • Specialisation module
  • Project module
  • Master's thesis
Course organisation

Besides the mandatory basic modules, three advanced modules can be chosen during the first year of studies in the areas of developmental biology, cell biology, molecular genetics, systems biology, molecular biology and bioinformatics. In the second year of studies, knowledge of the chosen area of specialisation is broadened by the specialisation module, which comprises a practical course focusing on methods and a scientific project in a research group.
