Description/content

The Franco-German Master's and Doctoral programme is a joint programme of Heidelberg University and the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris. The programme offers – especially at the doctoral level – great freedom of choice and individual organisation to participants. It will be necessary for doctoral students registered at Heidelberg to spend some time in Paris and in the French archives engaging in research for their theses. They will, nevertheless, regularly participate in a joint doctoral workshop each semester. This workshop will take place in Paris or Heidelberg and is dedicated to central methodological questions arising from the individual research questions.

Course organisation

The requirements for doctoral students are described in more detail on the programme website. As a general rule, students are free to organise their curriculum according to the particular requirements of their research and the specific details contained in their Cotutelle agreements.

Integrated/optional study abroad unit(s)

PhD students spend time in Paris and in Heidelberg studying and engaging in research in their particular fields of interest. The cohesion of the group is guaranteed by the PhD students' regular participation in joint workshops, which take place twice a year in Paris and Heidelberg, respectively. In the framework of these workshops, the PhD students introduce and discuss their research projects.
