The constantly increasing transmission of novel pathogens into the human population threatens human health, with the COVID-19 pandemic being a striking example. The goal of the GGNB graduate programme in Emerging Infectious Diseases (EIDIS) is to provide young scientists with excellent training in the area of emerging and re-emerging pathogens, with a strong focus on virus-host cell interactions, thereby enabling them to adequately meet future research challenges.
The research focus of EIDIS PIs is on host cell interactions of emerging viruses, in particular coronaviruses and herpesviruses, and the identification of novel therapeutic targets. EIDIS members have made major contributions to COVID-19 research, including the identification of the virus receptor and the ACE2 receptor as well as the demonstrations that SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern evade immune control. Students will learn important technologies in the areas of virology, molecular biology and cellular biology and will be trained how to work safely in BSL2 and BSL3 laboratories. EIDIS PIs offer several lecture series, including “Basic Virology” and “Molecular Biology of HIV Replication and Pathogenesis”.
The doctoral programme in "Emerging Infectious Diseases" is part of the Göttingen Graduate Center for Neurosciences, Biophysics, and Molecular Biosciences (GGNB). It is conducted jointly by the University of Göttingen and the German Primate Center.
The research-oriented programme is taught in English and open to students who hold a Master's degree (or equivalent) in the biosciences, chemistry, physics, or related fields.

In total, 20 credits are required, and doctoral students can tailor their individual curricula by choosing from all courses and events. Only a seminar on good scientific practice is mandatory.
The doctoral students hold at least three annual Thesis Advisory Committee meetings within the regular PhD time of three years. The maximum duration of PhD studies in GGNB is four years.
Option of research collaboration with other research institutions
Fees amount to around 400 EUR per semester. The fees include a prepaid semester ticket that entitles students to use regional trains (in Lower Saxony and Bremen) and city buses in Göttingen free of charge. Students of the University of Göttingen receive discounts for cultural events. Meals and drinks are also available at reduced prices at all university canteens.

The average cost of living in Göttingen is modest compared to other major university cities in Germany. Doctoral fellowships are available at approx. 1,200 to 1,500 EUR per month.
Master's degree (or equivalent) in biology, chemistry, physics, or related fields
Applicants whose native language is not English are asked to submit proof of proficiency in English. If no English test is available, proficiency in English can be evaluated during a personal interview. Proven higher education in English or a reasonably long stay in an English-speaking country may also be accepted.
