However, the University of Freiburg is a German university. This means there are a lot of German-taught lectures and seminars. Thus, German-speaking students have a broader choice of elective courses.

The English-taught Master's programme Sustainable Systems Engineering (SSE) with its international focus is particularly addressed to graduates with a Bachelor's degree in engineering or natural sciences. It provides in-depth engineering skills in sustainable materials, energy systems, and resilience engineering. Moreover, it teaches interdisciplinary knowledge in natural resources and climate change as well as sustainable economics, technologies and societies during its two-year duration.
The engineering Master’s degree in Sustainable Systems Engineering opens up a whole range of career prospects for you: classical engineering professions, working for environmental authorities and public institutions, developing materials and technologies, or a scientific-research career.

Sustainable Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary Master's programme that builds on fundamental knowledge in electrical and mechanical engineering as well as natural and material sciences. From the first semester on, students start selecting a variety of Elective Modules within the three Technical Concentration Areas, thus enabling them to specialise in their favourite research field(s) from the beginning. In addition to an engineering’s point of view of sustainability, interdisciplinary modules enhance the holistic understanding of sustainability.

Participants must ensure that sufficient funding is available to finance their participation in a course of study. The average cost of living in Freiburg for one month is currently approx. 850 EUR to 1,000 EUR.

As Freiburg is an attractive city, finding a suitable and affordable place to live can take a little while. The University of Freiburg offers all newly enrolled international students the possibility to apply for student housing via the International Office. In addition to these dormitories, which are run by the Studierendenwerk Freiburg (www.swfr.de/en), several independent residence halls are listed on the university website (http://www.housing.uni-freiburg.de).
