The Georg-August University School of Science (GAUSS) is a scientific institution at the University of Göttingen. It aims to promote excellence by structured training and supervision of more than 1,500 doctoral candidates in mathematics, natural and life sciences. Working on research projects towards their doctorate, the students are supported in the development of scientific networks in an international environment of the Göttingen campus and beyond.
GAUSS provides the organisational and regulatory umbrella for this programme. It was founded in 2005 by the five faculties of Biology and Psychology, Chemistry, Geoscience and Geography, Mathematics and Computer Science, and Physics. These faculties are closely cooperating with the University Medical Center, several Max Planck Institutes, a Fraunhofer Institute, the German Primate Center – Leibniz Institute for Primate Research, and the German Aerospace Center (Göttingen site) in doctoral education.
Each of the five mathematics and natural science faculties hosts faculty programmes. These faculty programmes are managed by the Dean’s Office of the respective faculty, serving as a first contact for application, admission and programme-related questions.
Some of the faculties also offer additional, thematically-focused doctoral programmes or externally funded research training groups. For these programmes, both the Dean’s Office of the respective faculty or the programme speaker may serve as a first contact for application, admission and programme-related questions.
The Göttingen Graduate Center for Neurosciences, Biophysics and Molecular Biosciences (GGNB) is an interdisciplinary scientific institution of the University of Göttingen under the umbrella of GAUSS. It hosts about one third of all GAUSS doctoral candidates in one of its 16 campus-wide interdisciplinary doctoral programmes. The GGNB was successful in the first and second round of the excellence initiative of the German federal and state governments and is now continued as a graduate centre connecting structured doctoral education at the science faculties, the University Medical Center Göttingen, two local Max Planck Institutes and the Leibniz Institute for Primate Research.
