Target group

The university-level courses are intended for anyone who would like to improve his or her German language skills and/or to explore various subject areas in more depth. German classes can be taken at levels B and C. Content and project courses will also be taught in German.


The International Summer Academy Sans Souci is composed of two components:

1. German language courses:

  • from German level B1 upwards
  • 32 lessons in total, including 10 hours of practical phonetics

In order to ensure the best learning outcomes, an initial language test will be provided.

2. Seminar and project courses:

  • held in German
  • on topics relating to German and European history, literature, politics, and/or culture (each with 18 hours of instruction)
  • supplementary field trips to course-relevant destinations (approx. 10 hours)
  • students can select two seminar courses and one project course

The course fee covers the following: accommodation, all courses (including course material and educational excursions), a discount on meal tickets at the dining halls, a discount on scientific and cultural centres in Potsdam and Berlin, and the entire cultural programme.

Accommodation is arranged by the organiser.
Type of accommodation

Course participants stay in a room in a student residence for the duration of the course. The kitchens and bathrooms in the student residences are shared.
The excellent public transport system makes it easy to reach the university campus, the city of Potsdam, the famous Sanssouci Park, or the centre of Berlin within minutes.


During the week, meals are available at the university-operated cafeteria or at the Mensa located on the New Palace campus, which is the campus where classes take place. They offer a wide range of delicious food, including vegetarian meals. At the salad bar, you can choose a combination of your favourite ingredients.

Is a social and leisure programme offered?
Description of social and leisure programme

You will find Potsdam and nearby Berlin to be two very exciting and vibrant places. Both cities offer an enormous mixture of cultural activities. Public transport allows for easy and fast travel to and from all locations in Potsdam and Berlin. We will make sure that you do not miss the most important events and attractions by giving you up-to-date recommendations.

The following cultural highlights are included in the course fee:

  1. Excursions related to the seminars and project courses to deepen the knowledge you will gain and help you to better understand subjects discussed in class (to be announced along with the seminar schedule at the beginning of the course)
  2. Excursions to introduce you to historical and cultural highlights in our region:
  • a Potsdam city tour, including a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site – Sanssouci Park
  • a Berlin city tour focusing on Berlin's central district and its change over time
  • two interregional trips on two different weekend days
  • a welcome evening with a buffet at a students' pub in the centre of Potsdam
