The university forms the backbone of Düsseldorf's academic reputation. Despite its recent founding, it has gained a reputation usually associated with older universities rich in tradition.
Five strong faculties – Business and Economics, Arts and Humanities, Law, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and Medicine – are home to more than 33,000 students, 340 professors, and 3,900 academic and non-academic staff members from all over the world.
The Faculty of Arts and Humanities stands out for its unique study programmes. Within the last years, HHU has become a top institution for life sciences. The Faculty of Medicine has gained a reputation for its research in cardiology and hepatology; cell and gene therapy form the backbone of clinical research. In addition, several institutions devoted to special fields are attached to the university. Examples of this are the Forschungszentrum Jülich and the German Diabetes Centre Düsseldorf. Many collaborative research centres, research training groups ("DFG-Graduiertenkollegs"), a number of research groups, and the "Cluster of Excellence on Plant Sciences" (CEPLAS) constitute a nucleus of specialisation and academic expertise.
This guarantees that HHU provides students and doctoral researchers with an excellent academic environment and ideal starting conditions for a future career in academia, business, or industry.
Furthermore, young doctoral researchers are given extensive support at HHU in order to further their careers in a targeted manner. The Heine Research Academies – a grouping of the Interdisciplinary Graduate and Research Academy Düsseldorf (iGRAD), the Medical Research School Düsseldorf (medRSD), the Graduate Academy of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (philGRAD), and the Junior Scientist & International Researcher Centre (JUNO) – offer a comprehensive curriculum in transferable skills, tailored to the specific needs and interests of doctoral researchers.
Heinrich Heine, the famous poet and philosopher for whom the university is named, stands for a brilliant mind, a cosmopolitan spirit, and open-heartedness. These are the very ideals that the university in North Rhine-Westphalia's capital embodies through internationally exceptional teaching, science, and research.
