Description/content

Proficiency in modern financial mathematics and actuarial science, along with the ability to apply this knowledge by using statistical and numerical techniques, is becoming increasingly important in the areas of finance and insurance. This distance learning programme is aimed at graduates of mathematics or other subjects with significant proportions of mathematics who wish to acquire a detailed understanding of financial mathematics.

The Financial Engineering postgraduate distance learning Master's programme provides participants with the necessary advanced and theoretical foundations and competencies in the areas of financial mathematics and financial economics. The programme also enables students to establish connections to actuarial science and imparts knowledge of statistical and numerical methods. It comprises twelve compulsory modules that encompass various topics, including:

  • Financial mathematics
  • Interest rate models
  • Financial decision making
  • Economics of banking
  • Insurance mathematics
  • Risk measures and rating systems
  • Financial statistics
  • Computational methods in finance

The programme starts with an introductory course on financial mathematics, which also repeats important concepts related to probability and statistics, and it ends with the Master's thesis.

Besides the Financial Engineering Master's programme, a two-semester distance learning certificate programme called Applied Financial Mathematics is also offered. This programme is interesting for professionally experienced mathematicians who would like to acquire a more in-depth understanding of financial mathematics. For information on the certificate programme, please visit our website.
