German Education Gate is a programme offered by Hochschule Fresenius in cooperation with Studienkolleg NRW (SK NRW). German Education Gate offers international students who do not have a German university entrance qualification a compact, high-quality programme to prepare them for the university entrance qualification examination (i.e., "Feststellungsprüfung"). The Feststellungsprüfung will take place directly at the Hochschule Fresenius Cologne campus at the end of the programme.

The students can take classes, and the examination will be taken in German and in English respectively (W-course).

From day one, students have direct access to all services of the Hochschule Fresenius campus in the centre of Cologne and benefit from the international education environment. At the end of the courses at SK NRW, students will take the final university entrance examination ("Feststellungsprüfung"). After passing this examination, they can apply for one of the Bachelor's degree programmes at Hochschule Fresenius, where a place is guaranteed. Depending on the chosen programme and visa granted, they can also apply to another university in North Rhine-Westphalia (for Bachelor's programmes in English) or throughout Germany (for Bachelor's programmes in German), depending on the visa granted. The Feststellungsprüfung in North Rhine-Westphalia does not differentiate between universities and universities of applied sciences.

Three different tracks ("focus courses") are offered in German: business (W-course), technical sciences (T-course), and medicine (M-course). Students in the business track take mathematics, political economy / business administration, and language classes in English and German. Students in the technical science track take mathematics, physics, chemistry, and German language classes. Students in the medicine track take biology, chemistry, physics, and German language classes.

The Cologne Regional Council (Bezirksregierung Köln) has authorised this state-recognised private university to conduct the "Feststellungsprüfung".

Students are well integrated into small, international groups. The experienced SK NRW team and lecturers provide full support for both studying and living. During their studies at the SK NRW, students will visit several German companies and participate in cultural programmes throughout Germany. Students can focus on their studies while the SK NRW supports students with accommodation, mentoring, integration into the Hochschule Fresenius, intercultural training, and so much more.

Content Bild

Hochschule Fresenius is a state-recognised university of applied sciences and one of Germany’s largest and most renowned privately run higher education institutions. About 12,000 students study at 10 campuses in Germany and New York; 68 Bachelor‘s and Master‘s study programmes are offered at five faculties.

Its practical focus, innovative course content, training that meets the requirements of the job market, small study groups, renowned corporate partners, and an extensive Alumni Network are just some of the advantages Hochschule Fresenius has to offer. Hochschule Fresenius has a history that spans 170 years. In 1848, Carl Remigius Fresenius founded the “Chemisches Laboratorium Fresenius”, which originally was devoted to practical laboratory work and education.

Hochschule Fresenius cooperates with Studienkolleg NRW at the Cologne campus, which offers optimal preparation for the “Feststellungsprüfung” for international students whose degrees do not allow them to directly study at a German university. Hochschule Fresenius has also been commissioned by the Cologne Regional Council (Bezirksregierung Köln) to implement the “Feststellungsprüfung”.

University location

Cologne is Germany’s oldest major city and a bustling metropolis of over a million people, with a broad variety of impressive sights. It is also home to the famous Cologne Cathedral, the most visited landmark in Germany. As one of Germany’s major university cities, it is not only a centre for academic and student life, but also extremely rich in terms of business, art, and culture. It offers a variety of international restaurants, and one can find the typically “kölsch” charm in the different neighbourhoods of the city. Cologne hosts numerous cultural events and has internationally known attractions: museums, churches, galleries, theatres, the Philharmonic Hall, and the Opera House.

Hochschule Fresenius, the Cologne campus, and Studienkolleg NRW are well located in an architecturally modern complex, the MediaPark, which is close to the city centre and the central station. It is easily accessible by public transport and has excellent connections to the road network.
