Description/content

The aim of the Master's in Economics and Management Science (MSc), known as MEMS, is to impart economic knowledge and competencies to students to enable them to work successfully both in professional practice and in the field of research. The speciality of the MEMS programme lies in the combination of business and economic content with the simultaneous specialisation (major) in a certain subject area of business administration or economics.

The main learning and qualification objectives of the course include:

Quantitative orientation: You will be able to work with quantitative data, the statistical and econometric method for data analysis and the corresponding software, and you will learn how to derive quantitative statements from models and check their plausibility.

Theoretical foundation: You will learn how to think like economists. You will be able to understand economic views, understand economic theories and their limits and differentiate between contradictions. You will understand how to test the capability of the hypotheses and their alternatives. You will be able to orientate the global reality better step by step.

Research competence: You will construct your mindset in a research-oriented way, enabling you to deal with topics in your thesis scientifically. You will acquire the methodological prerequisites to understand economics as science and, if necessary, to advance your research competence through a doctorate.

Internationality: You will get to know the international research landscape and international partner universities and have an international network through your studies at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

In addition to the formal entry and admission criteria, we expect you to be interested, first and foremost, in economic and business issues, and you should enjoy scientific work. You should also have good methodological and analytical skills, sufficient IT skills, a very good level of English, self-organisation skills, and commitment.

Course organisation

The core courses build the foundation of the MEMS studies and are selected within the areas of economics, general management, and methodological skills. Students specialise in a major. Each major has a set of courses from which students can choose. The fields are macroeconomics, microeconomics, accounting and finance, quantitative management science, and quantitative methods.

Each student can personally choose which electives he/she would like to take: either he/she aims at a stronger specialisation in the major or he/she diversifies the knowledge in the fields of economics and management science. The credits should be taken in economics and business content-related courses. It is also possible to transfer up to 30 credits from an exchange semester.

The field of professional skills compliments the highly analytical and theoretical education at Humboldt-Universität. The students are free to choose which kind of supplementary skills they would like to pursue: language courses, soft skills, an internship, or courses from other disciplines. 10 ungraded credits can be earned.

The Master's thesis is completed within the chosen major.

The entire programme is research-orientated, therefore quantitative methods are strongly implemented. One credit point is usually equivalent to a workload of 30 hours. It is the responsibility of each individual student to independently choose courses in order to obtain the necessary number of credit points.

The programme should be completed, including examinations, within four semesters, provided that the student has a sufficient background in mathematics. In order to attain the Master's degree, students must earn a total of 120 credit points.
