IMPRS-MOB offers outstanding training for enthusiastic young researchers along with cutting-edge science in basic molecular mechanisms that underlie development, function and dysfunction of organ systems. Our IMPRS-MOB faculty is based in the following three scientific hotspots: Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research, Justus Liebig University Giessen and Goethe University Frankfurt. Our programme brings together experts from all over the world.
Doctoral fellows will participate in a three-year professional structured programme including seminars, methods courses, and retreats, and they will benefit from the scientific offerings of the Max Planck Institute and affiliated universities (CPI, Goethe University Frankfurt and JLU Giessen). An individual thesis advisory committee will provide guidance and support. The mission of our PhD programme is to educate, train and mentor doctoral researchers throughout their PhD and beyond.
Doctoral fellows will participate in a three-year professionally structured programme. The graduate programme includes lecture series, scientific seminars and methods courses on state-of-the-art techniques established at the institutes. In addition, career development courses such as scientific writing and career fair opportunities will be offered, as well as German language courses. Annual retreats will help to deepen scientific knowledge and improve the exchange between IMPRS students and invited international keynote speakers. An individual thesis advisory committee will provide personal feedback, guidance and mentorship for every student.
IMPRS students also have access to all institute-wide seminars, colloquia and research symposia as well as to those of our cooperating partners in the various networks of excellence in which the IMPRS is embedded.
Enrolment fees may apply for students enrolling as PhD students at the contributing universities. Fees (300-350 EUR per semester) include a semester ticket covering public transport throughout large parts of the state of Hesse.
Travel grants are provided to all of our IMPRS fellows.

Accommodation can be temporarily provided at the guest house of the Max Planck Institute. After the arrival, we help students to seek private accommodation.
Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research:
The four departments at the Max Planck Institute focus on cardiac development and remodelling, pharmacology, alveolar development and remodelling, vascular signalling and developmental genetics. Additional research groups work on developmental cardiogenetics and signal transduction, the origin of cardiac cell lines, epigenetic regulation during the establishment of respiratory cell fate and lung cancer, and angiogenesis & metabolism. Our scientists have expertise in both basic science and translational research.
Goethe University Frankfurt:
GU Frankfurt is one of the worldwide leading centres for cardiovascular medicine with major expertise in stem cell therapies after myocardial infarction. Additional projects focus on inflammation and pain, and on cancer research.
Justus Liebig University Giessen:
Scientists at Justus Liebig University place their main focus on the cardiopulmonary system. Their work has gained a worldwide reputation over the past years. Infection and immunity as well as human nutrition are also ongoing project themes.
All three institutions participate in excellence networks such as the Cardio Pulmonary Institute (CPI), which was founded in 2019. Graduate students will have the chance to choose from outstanding research projects for their doctoral theses.
Bad Nauheim is a town with 30,000 residents, located 35 km north of Frankfurt. It has a long history as a spa focusing on treatments for the cardiovascular system. The town also has a long history as a host for clinical and basic science institutions. For more than 100 years, Bad Nauheim has been a hot spot for cardiovascular and physiological research. The German Society for Cardiology was founded in Bad Nauheim.
Shops, bars, and cultural spots are available in Bad Nauheim and our students enjoy a variety of outdoor activities including biking and hiking. Frankfurt, with its international spirit, large shopping malls and theatres, is only 25 minutes away and can be reached easily by train.
