Description/content

The Master's programme in Biochemistry at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University is an international programme for German, European and international students and taught entirely in English. Located in the attractive city of Munich, it offers a modern campus with the university's life science faculties, the Gene Center, Max-Planck-Institutes for Biochemistry and Neurobiology, Helmholtz Institute and Biotech companies nearby. It is combined with beautiful surroundings, nature and a high quality of life.

During the programme, internationally known researchers teach state-of-the-art theoretical, practical and organisational skills in biochemistry with a focus on how to independently conduct biochemical research. Aside from a thorough mandatory basic training in biochemistry, it offers a wide range of subjects to choose from as complementing major and minor topics in order to either develop students' broader knowledge around biochemistry or help students focus and specialise in a particular field in depth.

A prerequisite for application to the programme is a Bachelor's in biochemistry or a related field with sufficient practical training as well as sufficient theoretical knowledge. Applicants to the programme are subject to a selection process. Upon selection, they must pass an entrance exam.

Course organisation

The programme is a two-year course of study that starts in April and October of each year. It is composed of three blocks each consisting of lab and theory modules which are accompanied by lectures and seminars with current topics from guest speakers.

The first block is mandatory. It gives students a deeper insight into basic concepts of biochemistry. This biochemistry block contains an advanced lecture module, a research lab course/ rotation and seminars. It is combined with a lab course/ rotation in methods in life sciences and a module in data analysis.

The second block is composed of a second major subject plus an extension topic. The second major subject can be chosen according to each student's interest among options from chemistry, cell biology or microbiology.

For an extension topic (a lecture module plus lab course/rotation module) we offer 16 options to choose from. Aside from the subjects offered for the major subject, there are subjects like structural biology, immunity, molecular cell biology and more. In exceptional cases, the second major subject can be replaced by two extension topics.

The third block is the Master's thesis. With a duration of six months, the thesis concludes the programme. During this time, students work independently on a scientific problem under the supervision of a group leader in a lab of their choice.

Integrated internships

Five lab rotations / practical courses are part of the programme. They provide the opportunity for students to develop their advanced technical skills. Depending on the chosen subjects, some lab courses require organisation on the student's part while others are pre-organised. A module in data analysis will teach students basic programming as well as mathematics and statistic skills for the evaluation and interpretation of experimental data.
