Description/content

The consecutive, international Master's programme introduces advanced methods in spectroscopy and the structural exploration of chemical and biochemical compounds (especially biopolymers). Insight into structural aspects, structural spectroscopic investigations, spectroscopic techniques and synthesis of complex substances constitutes the major focus of the programme. The programme is based on applied research, which means that students are expected to work and think independently in a research context. In order to ensure international scientific contacts and cooperation, the language of the programme is English.

Further details can be found at https://www.chemie.uni-leipzig.de/en/study/vor-dem-studium/studienangebot

Course organisation

The study programme is laid out for two years (four semesters) with a total of 120 ECTS credit points. One credit point corresponds to an average workload of 30 hours. The programme can also be completed part-time (four years, 30 credit points per year). Up to 60 credit points may be acquired abroad. This is recommended, but is the responsibility of each individual student and requires prior consultations. For comparison, see the ASC Master's programme, in which international mobility is mandatory. The programme contains four compulsory modules (5 ECTS each, two modules in the winter semester, two in the summer semester). Students can earn 40 ECTS credit points in choice obligatory modules and 30 ECTS credit points in three choice obligatory lab research projects. Some of the modules also contain lab courses. Finally, the Master's thesis is credited with 30 ECTS credit points.

Academic admission requirements

Applicants are required to have a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry or a closely related topic with an equivalent amount of chemistry content. Since the emphasis lies on spectroscopic techniques, particular knowledge about fundamental issues in this area is required. Certain minimum ECTS credit point values have to be reached in certain areas of chemistry:

Inorganic Chemistry 20 ECTS

Organic Chemistry 20 ECTS

Physical Chemistry 20ECTS

Analytical Chemistry 10 ECTS

In addition, practical lab work in inorganic and organic chemistry of together at least 300 hours needs to be proved.

English level B2 or better

Details can be found at: https://www.uni-leipzig.de/en/studying/prospective-students/courses-of-study/degree-programme/course/show/structural-chemistry-and-spectroscopy-msc

Language requirements

Students are required to have a command of English at the B2 level or better. The level of English needs to be proven by suitable certificates. In order to successfully participate, we recommend a level of C1.
