Description/content

In the Cardiovascular Science PhD programme, doctoral students from different disciplines, faculties and institutions (University Medical Center Göttingen, Georg-August University Göttingen, German Primate Center, and the Göttingen Max-Planck Institutes) are supervised and trained together.
The focus of the programme is on the development, biology, and function of the healthy heart as well as on the study and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Heart disease remains one of the most common diseases in Europe, occurring in two to four percent of the population. In the past decade, enormous progress has been made. However, the morbidity and mortality of affected patients remains high. New strategies for studying heart disease have made advances in understanding at the molecular level in recent years through the use of imaging methods with high-resolution microscopy, high-throughput techniques, and stem cell technology. Scientific observation and investigation at the molecular, cellular, and organ level is important to continue to foster future developments and insights that will inform practical clinical medicine. In this context, PhD students will work at the molecular, cellular, and organ levels, respectively, using modern methods to accurately and functionally understand the complex interplay and functional maintenance of cells/tissues in the cardiovascular system.

Cardiovascular sciences are a designated research focus in the Göttingen research landscape. In addition to an international Master's programme in Cardiovascular Science, there are excellent research groups at the different faculties and institutions and several research networks funded by the DFG (German Research Foundation) (e.g. RTG2824 & CRC1002).

Course organisation

The Cardiovascular Science doctoral programme is part of the Göttingen Graduate Center for Neurosciences, Biophysics, and Molecular Biosciences (GGNB).

The research-oriented programme is taught in English and open to students who hold a Master's degree (or equivalent) in the biosciences, chemistry, physics, or related fields.

The GGNB offers an integrated training and qualification concept consisting of:

  • thesis advisory committees advising the doctoral students and monitoring the progress of the doctoral projects
  • scientific methods courses, seminars and summer schools in all areas of science covered by the graduate school
  • German language courses and courses on scientific English as well as professional skills courses in the four categories of Scientific Communication; Good Scientific Practice, Ethics, and Intellectual Property; Self-Management and Organisational Skills; and Career Development
  • industry excursions to biotechnological, pharmaceutical, optical, or (bio)physical companies guided by GGNB alumni
  • student-organised scientific symposia and career-related events
  • annual PhD retreats organised by the departments

In total, 20 credits are required and doctoral students can tailor their individual curriculum by choosing from all courses and events. Only a seminar on good scientific practice is mandatory.

The doctoral students hold at least three annual Thesis Advisory Committee meetings within the regular PhD programme time of three years. The maximum duration of PhD studies in the GGNB programme is four years.

Accommodation

The Accommodation Service of the International Office supports international students who are enrolled at the University of Göttingen in finding accommodation and serves as a point of contact for related queries. The Accommodation Service also publishes suitable offers from private landlords in Göttingen and collaborates with the Student Services ("Studentenwerk"). As the number of available accommodation options in Göttingen is limited, it is highly recommended to contact the Accommodation Service as early as possible.
