The unique combination of challenging lectures and workshops in engineering addresses Master's and PhD students who are interested in technology and want to gain insight into the big topics of Industry 4.0 and digital twins.

Description/content

The Industry 4.0 Summer School programme gives insight into the objectives and strategies of Industry 4.0. It shows the current status of activities and provides information on how to benefit from the ideas linked to Industry 4.0 today. In addition to a theoretical introduction to Industry 4.0, the main technologies and processes for the implementation of Industry 4.0 will be introduced and then addressed in greater detail in a workshop. The aim is actually to enable digitalisation. Starting from the process itself, the digitisation of companies will be introduced and then expanded on using hands-on examples. A model system will be used to demonstrate the technological possibilities.

  • Learn why Industry 4.0 is so important for European industry and what is hidden behind the keyword I4.0.
  • Get to know the development strategy for Industry 4.0 and find out which actions still need to be taken.
  • Learn the keywords and key terms related to Industry 4.0, from augmented reality and cloud, CPS and IoT to smart factory, value creation chains, and XaaS.
  • Look through the entire digital value creation chain, from intelligent sensors to cloud services.
  • Understand the technologies that make a machine, system, or factory capable for industrial communication.
  • Discover the significance of IT, IT infrastructure, and IT security in the context of Industry 4.0 for an automation system.
  • Design your first digitised processes and find out about the effects on a model factory.

Additionally, the concept of digital twins is introduced and discussed in detail. Different use cases and workshops are used to gain hands-on experience with digital twins.
