Description/content

The programme covers the fields of linguistics, literary studies and cultural studies, as well as academic English. Students develop an advanced understanding of the language, literatures and cultures of the English-speaking world, focussing particularly on Great Britain, North America and the post-colonial anglophone regions. They learn to identify relevant research questions and methods and are able to engage independently with linguistic, literary and cultural topics. The strong English-language component of the programme prepares students to communicate and express themselves in excellent English.

Course organisation

In the first year, the basic modules in Literary Studies, Cultural Studies, and Linguistics introduce students to the primary methods and concepts used to study anglophone literatures and cultures and the English language.

In the advanced and focus modules, students deepen their knowledge of anglophone literatures, cultures, and the English language; they apply and enhance the skills acquired in the basic modules in a series of thematic seminars. Students in the major create their individual specialisation profile in the focus modules I and II, which can be taken in Literary Studies, Cultural Studies, or Linguistics.

Accommodation

Accommodation is available through the student services organisation ("Studierendenwerk") or on the private market. Rooms in student accommodation cost approx. 200 to 440 EUR per month. As Tübingen is a very attractive place to live, private accommodation is more expensive and can take some effort to find. To make sure you find a suitable place to live, you should start looking as early as possible.

We recommend you apply for student accommodation through the “Studierendenwerk” at the same time that you apply for admission to the programme (https://www.my-stuwe.de/en/housing/halls-of-residence-tuebingen/and https://www.my-stuwe.de/en/housing/faqs/) and send in a copy of your notification of admission as soon as you have received it. (Your application won’t be processed before the “Studierendenwerk” has received proof of your admission.) For further information, check out the “Studierendenwerk” pages on housing in Tübingen (https://www.my-stuwe.de/en/housing/housing-infos/).
