Description/content

Our biotechnology degree programme provides you with a broad spectrum of practical and theoretical fundamentals. We cover all important areas of modern biotechnology with our study content. You will attend lectures and practical courses in biochemistry, genetic engineering, microbiology, enzyme technology, bioprocess engineering, processing technology, immunology, cell culture technology and more. Moreover, you will learn how to specifically modify microorganisms, how to produce proteins, how technical fermenters work, and you will get to know numerous important analytical methods.

The study programme aims to cover the technical breadth of biotechnology at a high and modern level. As a university of applied sciences, we keep the requirements of the labour market in focus. In addition, many practical methods are taught in modern laboratories and computer rooms throughout the entire study programme.

In the science city of Jülich, students have many possibilities to complete their scientific theses at renowned research institutes. In addition to a strong biotech industry, the Jülich Research Centre and the Brainergy Park Jülich with several thousand scientists offer an innovative research environment. Research groups at the Department of Biotechnology also offer final theses.

The department offers a postgraduate Master's programme in Biotechnology. In this, students can specialise in biotechnology fields.

More details about the programme are available on our website: https://www.fh-aachen.de/en/studies/degree-programmes/biotechnology-bsc/study-contents.

Course organisation

During the first three semesters, students focus on theoretical and practical basic sciences and engineering courses. Starting in the fourth semester, students focus on their specialisation. In the sixth semester, each student conducts the research for a practical project in addition to the Bachelor's thesis.

Description of other international elements

International students may choose to complete the "Freshman Year" course in Germany prior to pursuing the Biotechnology Bachelor's programme. The "Freshman Year" programme at FH Aachen serves as an integration programme. It acts as a "soft landing" for international students, bridging the gap between their schooling in their home country and university studies in Germany. (https://www.fh-aachen.de/en/university/freshman/).

Possibility of finding part-time employment

Applicants should not count on financing their stay in Jülich or Aachen by working part time during their studies. However, some students are successful in finding part-time jobs either at the university or elsewhere.

Accommodation

Some students live in student dormitories. They live in shared apartments in which each student has his or her own room. Living areas, bathrooms, and cooking facilities are shared. Furnished rooms start at about 300 EUR per month plus about 75 EUR per month for electricity, water, and heating. Most rooms require the first month's rent and a security deposit of one to three months' rent in advance before you can move into the room. If the room is in good condition when you move out, your security deposit will be returned. International students can place their names on a waiting list for the student dormitories.
