Description/content

Students choose nine modules. The module "Mexican Studies and Spanish" (in Guadalajara) and the internship module are mandatory.

The modules cover three subject areas:

Linguistics

  • Grammar and lexicon
  • Assessment research & development
  • Pronunciation (acquisition, teaching)
  • Linguistic discourse analysis
  • Text linguistics
  • Second language acquisition
  • Linguistics of German with consideration of Spanish

Cultural Studies

  • Cultural studies research
  • Literature, culture, media
  • Culture of the German-speaking world
  • Intercultural studies: Mexico and the German-speaking countries
  • Literature studies in an intercultural context
  • Translation studies in an intercultural context

Didactics / Methodology

  • Developing and researching teaching: Literacy
  • Developing and researching teaching: Orality
  • Problems and developmental trends in German as a second language (DaZ)
  • Lesson planning for German as a foreign language in the Latin American context

There are also cross-disciplinary modules:

  • Current developmental trends in German as a foreign and second language I and II (optional)
  • Internship module (mandatory): five-week compulsory internship, which must be completed in the second or third semester at the University of Guadalajara

Students begin to work on their Master's theses in the third semester and complete their theses in the fourth semester. The Master's thesis is written in German.

Integrated internships

A five-week internship is mandatory. It is usually completed in Guadalajara. Both partner universities provide support in finding an internship position.

Semester contribution

Students pay an administrative fee. For the summer semester of 2024, this fee was approx. 266 EUR. This includes the "Deutschland Ticket", a ticket valid for public transport in all of Germany.

Academic admission requirements

An undergraduate university degree in one of the following subjects is usually required: German as a Foreign Language, German, German Studies, Linguistics, Foreign Language Didactics, Literary Studies, or related fields.

Language requirements
  • Knowledge of German at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (for students starting their studies in Guadalajara, this level must be demonstrated at the beginning of their studies in Leipzig)
  • Knowledge of Spanish at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (reading comprehension)
  • Knowledge of Spanish at level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (other skills)
