The courses are designed for undergraduate students from all academic disciplines with a strong general interest in cultures, Europe and Germany in particular. A good command of English and the willingness to actively participate during course activities are required.
Students can choose between two study tracks.
A) Europe, Diversity, and the Question of Identity
The past years have seen the EU facing a lot of criticism from various sides and a plethora of challenges threaten the community - internally and externally - and what held its societies together for a long time. In this programme, students examine the fundamental notions at the heart of what Europe stands for: pluralism, democracy, subsidiarity, and the rule of law. Furthermore, courses cover the current challenges Europe and the EU face today: the rise of nationalism; political fragmentation and radicalisation; migration, religion and questions of identity and war.
B) Representing the European Past in Cross-Cultural Communities
This programme delves into the political processes entailed in remembering and forgetting, introduces students to the commemorative landscape of the EU and explores possible solutions to the challenges facing European collective memory or what could be called Europe's culture of remembrance. Sessions will deal with what makes us remember some things while other facets of our lives and historical events are suppressed or hard to recollect. How does what we remember (and what we [choose to] forget) structure the reality that we live in – symbolically, physically, and politically? How is the past used (or abused) to serve the present needs of individuals and collectives in Europe today, where different concepts of identity often clash with the reality of cosmopolitan communities that are both ethnically and culturally diverse?
Both tracks
In addition to the academic programme, we offer all participants German language classes (for beginners [A1] and students who already possess some German skills [A1-A2]), an intercultural workshop that prepares participants for the very diverse setting in which all classes take place, a buddy programme that matches each participant with local students who offer support throughout the duration of the programme (and beforehand), and a rich and varied social programme that offers many opportunities to experience arts, culture, and local student life in one of Germany’s most historical university towns.

Participants must have a good command of English to be able to follow the academic courses and participate in discussions.
Participants do not have to have any prior knowledge of German.
For participants with a higher German language level (B1 to C1), we will offer the possibility of independently carrying out project work (or similar) in German.
Accommodation will be arranged by the T-IES programme and is covered by the programme fee. Tübingen is a university town with a large number of students, and the availability of rooms in student dormitories is very limited.
Depending on availability, students will either be accommodated in an apartment, with a host family, in a student shared flat, or in a student dorm. They will either have their own room or share it with one other programme participant. Kitchens and bathrooms will be used jointly.
Participants will receive a "Mensa card" for use in every university canteen and cafeteria.
Prices in the student dining hall vary from 3.10 EUR to 5 EUR per meal.

Being so close to nature and surrounded by forests and hills makes Tübingen very special.
Located in the heart of Europe
Located in Baden-Württemberg, a southern German region with strong European traditions, Tübingen is equally close to both Strasbourg (France), the seat of the European Parliament, and Frankfurt, the seat of the European Central Bank. The nearby Stuttgart airport serves most international destinations, putting Tübingen just a few hours away from European cities like Paris, London, or Prague.
Close to Stuttgart – a high-tech region
Stuttgart, the capital of Baden-Württemberg, can be reached in only 30 minutes by train. With over five million inhabitants, the Stuttgart metropolitan region is one of the biggest in Germany. Stuttgart lies in a valley, and it only takes an hour to reach the Black Forest. Home to companies such as Bosch, Daimler, and Porsche, it has been a centre of technological innovation for over a century. Stuttgart has very good train connections, putting it just a few hours away from Munich, Berlin, and Hamburg.
