Description/content

Get an interdisciplinary education and training experience and become a leader or manager for European affairs in public and private sectors - in and outside the EU. Alternatively, work in EU institutions, diplomatic service, the public sector of the member states or partner states of the EU or in private business or think tanks, interest groups or in lobbying.

The main objective of the programme is to convey sound and specialist knowledge of European public and private management. The course consists of seven modules (plus thesis and an elective internship) providing students with an interdisciplinary approach to key factors of European integration. The main topics to be covered are: the institutional system of the EU, EU economic integration and business in the EU, management systems in the EU and the management of European funds, European business law, policy-making in the EU as well as the EU in an international dimension. The modules are divided between lectures and seminars. Lectures provide a thorough grounding in the essentials of European business and management, policies and law. In the seminars, students will develop specialist knowledge on a variety of topics including "Theories of Integration", "Competition policy in the EU", "The Crisis of the EU", "Neighbourhood Policy of the EU", "International Teamwork" or "Doing Business in the EU", "Marketing in the EU", etc.

Course organisation

The programme places great emphasis on improving the students' cross-cultural and analytical skills. A seminar in cross-cultural communication familiarises students with recent developments in the field and a class on research skills and methods will improve the students' ability to tackle a problem scientifically and to master the art of researching, writing good research papers and presenting them well.
The Intensive Seminar in Brussels (organised jointly with our European partners, with students and lecturers from several European universities, with visits to the European organisations, think tanks and NGOs) and an ongoing programme in Bremen called "Meet the Europeans" provide ample opportunity to come into close contact with representatives from EU administrations, European-based organisations and enterprises, to take part in European cultural activities and to visit EU-sponsored projects in the region. An orientation week at the beginning of the academic year offers orientation and assistance.

University location

The Free Hanseatic City of Bremen is the capital of the federal state of Bremen, the smallest state in Germany, with a population of 684,000 and an area covering 404 square kilometres, located in north-west Germany close to the North Sea coast. As a unique city in which history comes alive and the future is being planned, Bremen is a place of sensual pleasures, including not only things that melt in your mouth, but also countless delights to see and hear.
It is a city of art and culture, parks and gardens, romantic quarters, and elegant shopping malls. Indeed, Bremen has even more to offer: tradition and cosmopolitanism. The people of Bremen are by no means as stiff as they are often said to be. On the contrary, they enjoy celebrating frequently, preferably with guests from abroad who look forward to returning to Bremen as good friends. A city that can look back on a thousand-year history: nowhere is this more evident than on the famous market square, a favourite meeting place for the citizens of Bremen. The statue of Roland is the symbol of civic liberty and freedom in Bremen. In the Town Hall, the pulse of political life of the Free Hanseatic City still beats. The magnificent renaissance façade and the Bremen Town Musicians just around the corner are world famous.

Trade and shipping have determined the character of the city for centuries and play an essential role in the business life of Bremen and of the Federal Republic of Germany. Bremen is a significant site for the automotive industry, electronics, and nautical science as well as the aviation and aerospace industry, and at the same time a centre of food, drink, and tobacco production. These industries are represented by companies such as Mercedes AG, STN ATLAS Elektronik, Lürssen Werft, EADS Astrium, OHB, Beck's Bier, and Kraft Foods.

Cultural life is characterised by numerous museums and art collections, theatre, ballet, opera, and music.
Bremen is a stronghold of sports such as football (SV Werder), horseback riding, handball, dancing, and cycling, with much-acclaimed international tournaments.
