Digital Currencies and Blockchain Technology
- Intensive course with a total of 70 hours
- Three ECTS credit points / four U.S. credit hours
This course is designed to provide an introductory understanding of blockchain and cryptocurrencies, such as bitcoin.
Explore bitcoin, "the Internet of money", an exciting new form of digital currency and store of value that can be transferred between people and companies without the need for a middleman (e.g. banks).
The course will cover:
- The basics of bitcoin, including its key features, the structure of the bitcoin blockchain, current challenges of the bitcoin network, the history of digital currencies, the invention of decentralised consensus through proof of work, and a technical overview of bitcoin as well as alternative/advanced uses of the blockchain
- A practical introduction to digital currencies
- Banking and financial implications of digital currencies: overview of how cryptocurrencies fit in with the existing monetary and banking system
- The newest developments in the sector (e.g. Lightning Network, decentralised finance, central banks digital currencies)
This course is ideal for students with an interest in this innovative area. No prior knowledge is required.
