Description/content

The Master of Digital Entrepreneurship (MoDE) is an innovative study programme that will provide you with theoretical and methodical knowledge about digitalisation from the perspectives of law, economics, social sciences, and computer sciences. MoDE is offered by the European New School of Digital Studies (ENS) – a cross-border, international teaching and research institution with a focus on digitalisation. Based at the German-Polish border, the ENS is a joint academic project of the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) and the Adam Mickiewicz University Poznań in Poland.

The four-semester Master's programme is completely in English and provides you with an introduction to the fundamentals of digitalisation and practical skills in project management and business. MoDE is a project-based Master's programme designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to successfully work on individual or group projects. With this skill set of theoretical and practical methods, you will be able to develop and reflect on your own entrepreneurial solutions for the challenges of the digital transformation in Europe.

You won't have to do it all by yourself: The ENS study concept is based on a close collaboration between students and academic staff in teaching, team-based projects, and everyday working life. A dedicated co-working space, innovative teaching methods and small courses enable students to develop and drive their own projects. In addition, academic and non-academic mentors help you to plan and realise new project ideas and support you in building your personal network.

As a graduate of the MoDE, you will have a firm foundation in ethics and the know-how to organise, plan and run a business, both for profit and non-profit. You will learn how to analyse markets and to establish an economically sustainable unit that integrates the promises of democracy and human rights with digital technologies.

The ideal project for applying for the MoDE is digital, creative and promises to contribute to making the world a better place. It puts you in the driver’s seat of a non-profit, not-for-profit or profit-oriented entrepreneurship. Your project could be a platform offering services, a tool for solving real-world problems, an algorithm fostering fair distribution of a scarce resource, or any other entity that is worth working on. You do not need to have a proper business plan, well-reasoned ideas about your entity’s legal set-up or a team that is capable of implementing it. Although it is no mistake to have thought about these issues (even less so to have answers and to report them), we do not require them. We will help you develop them during your stay at ENS. It is more important for us that you have an innovative entrepreneurial idea and that you believe enough in it to convince us of its merits. We are looking forward to learning from you and to offering our help in realising your ideas.

Course organisation

The MoDE has a modular structure enabling you to choose from a variety of topics according to your individual aims and profile.
The first part of your studies will comprise a basic introduction to the theoretical and methodological fundamentals of digitalisation from the different scientific perspectives involved. Moreover, you will acquire practical skills in technical topics, project management, law and business while already starting to work on your individual specialisation. The second part of your studies will give you the chance to focus on your individual or group project, complete an internship and work on your Master's thesis.

Integrated internships

The internship in Module D is mandatory and consists of 12 ECTS. It can be completed either locally or abroad. There are two options: a part-time or a full-time work placement. In case of part-time employment, students can substitute the missing ECTS with workshops from the Viadrina Founders Center (Gründungszentrum) with 1 ECTS equating to one workshop (eight hours).

Students should make arrangements for internships on their own. The practical experience should correspond to the study programme and refer to digital society. The Viadrina Career Center can also assist in the internship offers. For the recognition, students should provide a confirmation certificate of the completed internship from their employer. The ENS Examination Board is responsible for its acknowledgement.

Semester contribution

Thanks to the publicly financed German university system, no tuition fees are charged–neither for German nor for international students. However, students will have to pay a semester fee at Viadrina, which currently adds up to around 350 EUR per semester. This includes a ticket for public transport, the cost of the student ID card, and a registration fee. The amount varies each semester and might increase slightly over time.

Costs of living

Student life in Frankfurt (Oder) is less expensive than in most other German university cities. In order to be able to live here with all the expenses you can expect (health insurance, rent, etc.), you will need about 600 EUR per month. Depending on which type of accommodation you choose, monthly rent is usually 200 to 250 EUR.

The European New School of Digital Studies (ENS) is a joint academic venture of the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) and the Adam Mickiewicz University Poznan. It was founded in the spirit of connecting economists, lawyers, social scientists, and technical experts in computer and technology sciences to take on the challenges of the digital transformation. We conduct transdisciplinary research, teach about the challenges and opportunities of technological innovation, and belong to an international community keen to impact Europe’s digital transformation. At ENS, you will be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to become an architect of the digital change. Our study programme is centred around the idea of interdisciplinarity and knowledge entrepreneurship, involving the pursuit of information- and knowledge-related opportunities to develop, expand, and circulate a domain-related knowledge base and pursue new ventures related to it.

The central element of our study concept is a close cooperation between students and academic staff in teaching, team-based projects, and everyday work life. You will have access to our very own co-working space, which is the central meeting spot at ENS. We offer innovative teaching methods and small courses in which students can develop and advance their own projects in the fields of non-profit, not-for-profit, and profit-oriented entrepreneurship. In addition, both academic and non-academic mentors will help you to plan and realise your project ideas and support you in developing your personal network of partners from business, politics, and civil society.

The Collegium Polonicum is a unique academic and cultural interaction hub situated directly on the border of Poland and Germany. It offers an excellent environment to dive into your graduate programme or kick off your academic career by providing modern technical infrastructure, direct contact with academic and administrative staff, and an international and open-minded atmosphere. The heart of our ENS campus consists of a co-working space where students, academic staff, mentors, and external professionals work side by side outlining their vision for Europe’s digital society.

University location

The home of ENS is the Collegium Polonicum (CP) in the twin cities of Frankfurt (Oder) and Słubice. Słubfurt (Słubice + Frankfurt = Słubfurt) is more than just a location close to Berlin. It is the place where ENS connects to citizens and realises local projects in cooperation with cultural initiatives, businesses, and municipality. Słubfurt is where we find all the promises and difficulties of an integrating Europe. It is the right place for those who are ready to cross borders and go the extra mile.
