Description/content

Wood is a fascinating and unmistakably natural material; we can feel its warmth, its weight and texture, its edges and corners. The new International Bachelor of Wood Technology (IWT) degree programme at the Rosenheim campus is aimed specifically at young people from outside Germany who have a limited knowledge of German and who are interested in wood as a sustainable material. The IWT practice-oriented study programme at the Rosenheim University of Applied Sciences is as unique and as full of potential as the material wood itself.

Take advantage of the almost 100 years of wood tradition and the expertise at the Rosenheim University of Applied Sciences and become a "Rosenheimer Holztechniker".

The IWT Bachelor's degree offers a comprehensive and solid university engineering education in the field of wood technology, which includes wood material science, economics of the wood industry, wood production and technologies. Sustainability and the circular economy are also important aspects of your studies. Furthermore, you will acquire the general engineering, natural science, economics and organisational skills that are important for a successful engineering career.

With an IWT Bachelor's degree you gain a wide range of opportunities to establish yourself on the national and international job market. With fluent German and English as well as excellent wood-specific and engineering skills, IWT graduates have outstanding professional development and career opportunities, including higher management positions.

The first three semesters cover the fundamental engineering studies, as well as specific courses in wood and wood-based materials. Your courses in the first semester are held in English. From the second semester onwards, you will attend selected subject modules in German and, from the third semester onwards, German is the language of instruction. In parallel, you will learn the German language (level B2 / C1 CEFR) in language courses tailored to the programme.

Beginning in the fourth semester, you will join your peers from the German-language wood technology programme and attend the higher level engineering courses and electives in German. The sixth semester is reserved for a practical semester / internship in one of the many local companies in Germany or in a company abroad.

Course organisation

The degree programme contains eight semesters, split into three parts:

  • First semester, introductory engineering courses as well as wood-specific courses (language of instruction: English)
  • Second semester, during which introductory engineering courses are held in English, but you will also join your German peers in wood-specific classes (languages of instruction: English or German, respectively)
  • Third to eighth semester, during which you continue your studies in the German Wood Technology programme, including an internship in the sixth semester and a Bachelor’s thesis (language of instruction: predominantly German)

During the first three semesters, you will acquire German language skills as well, starting with level A2 of CEFR. This will successively enable you to join the German-taught courses during the second semester, where you will study alongside German students of the German Wood Technology programme.

Many of the wood-specific modules include sessions in the world-class laboratories of the TH Rosenheim. The sixth semester is reserved for a practical semester in one of the many regional companies in Germany or in a company abroad. In the eighth semester, you will work on your Bachelor's thesis.
