Our courses in Leipzig combine face-to-face learning with modern digital methods. In addition to varied on-site activities, we supplement the lessons with an intuitive learning platform that serves as a central location for materials and exchange.

If necessary, learning can take place entirely online: You can take part in live video conferences and deepen your knowledge during independent learning phases.

Our learning service is there to support you throughout the course.

Target group

Our fall course is aimed at international researchers, doctoral candidates, and students who are about to start their academic work or studies in Germany and would like to improve their German language skills in a targeted and practical way.

Description/content

Language skills for your studies – discover and experience Leipzig

The Academic Life in Leipzig autumn course combines intensive German lessons with exciting insights into Leipzig as a centre of science and higher education. This course is ideal for anyone looking to improve their language skills while gaining first-hand experience of academic life in Germany.

Learn German – intensively and individually

  • Online placement test before the start of the course and personal oral assessment at the start 
  • Learn in small groups (approx. 14 participants) – from level A1 to C1 
  • Approx. 25 lessons per week, including phonetics training in individual or small group sessions 
  • Modern textbook (included in the course fee), up-to-date materials, and access to the Moodle learning platform 
  • Modules on academic speaking and writing 
  • Practical explorations on the topic of "Studying and researching in Leipzig" – in cooperation with Leipzig universities and research institutions 
  • Written and oral final exam 
  • Acquisition of five ECTS points possible (can be credited at the home university) 
  • Certificate of participation with documented test results

Experience Germany – culture and everyday life up close

  • Interactive cultural events with a focus on real-life regional studies – e.g. research and interviews on site
  • City walks and exploratory tours in and around Leipzig
  • Visits to research institutions in Leipzig 
  • One full-day excursion 
  • Personal support from the course team 
  • Further optional offers (e.g. weekend excursions to Dresden or Weimar)

Participation in the course is already possible at beginner level. Language classes are offered at levels A1 to C1.

Technical equipment and programmes

As part of our autumn language course "Academic Life in Leipzig", additional material and exercises are provided on a learning platform. Participants will therefore need a notebook or tablet in order to learn successfully.
It is important that participants can work independently or collaboratively on the online learning platform in addition to face-to-face teaching.

Meals

Our course participants can eat at the student cafeteria "Mensa am Park", which is part of the campus of Leipzig University in the city centre.

Close to our institute as well as in the nearby city centre, you will also find a wide variety of cafés, restaurants, and pubs.

Moreover, there are small kitchens in the accommodation, where you can prepare meals on your own.

Description of social and leisure programme

The course price includes a varied accompanying programme that combines learning with shared experiences:

  • one full-day excursion, e.g. to Erfurt – exciting impressions and new perspectives outside of the seminar room
  • shared opening and closing dinners – a great way to arrive and bring the course to a close together
  • selected cultural events, e.g. a concert – for special evenings full of music and encounters
  • visits to museums and places of interest, e.g. a guided tour of the Forum of Contemporary History – bringing history to life

We also offer other interesting excursions, such as an excursion to Dresden. This is bookable for a small surcharge.

We are happy to give personal tips for your own activities so that you can discover Leipzig and the surrounding area in your own way.
