The course targets international students with a good knowledge of German who are studying historical or political science or who are interested in these cultural topics and in German culture in general.
The course focuses on current events in German politics and society as well as important themes from German history. Addressing German culture from an intercultural perspective takes precedence over learning bare facts. Teaching is connected to real-life situations and includes extracurricular learning venues in addition to the lessons in class.
Linguistically, the focus is on communication and a confident use of the German language, adapted to specific situations. Grammatical knowledge and technical language aspects are practised and developed as appropriate to the upper level.
The course amounts to 25 hours per week (17 hours of general language and eight hours of technical language).
For this course DAAD university summer course scholarships (usually starting at language level B1) are available. To submit your application, please note the reference number HSK-1167. This number can only be used for presence courses. Applying for attending online courses is not possible.
Participants should at least have a good B1 level (or higher) in German.
The rent for a room in a dormitory is 270 EUR to 370 EUR, plus a deposit of 50 EUR. The rent for a room with a host family is 300 EUR, plus a deposit of 50 EUR.
Inexpensive breakfast and lunch are available in the student restaurant.
We offer our participants a varied leisure programme. For example, they can discover Bielefeld and the surrounding area, cook "typical German" meals, learn more about the German football culture (including a visit to the stadium of Arminia Bielefeld), watch current German films, or make use of the university's sports programme. The German course includes two excursions, e.g. to Bonn and Münster.
