The course targets international students with a good knowledge of German who are studying in German, plan to study at a German university, or are specifically interested in German academic language.

Description/content

Reading and writing academic texts are key study skills. However, many specialist and scientific texts demand complex skills. The project is aimed at participants who would like to improve their reading and writing skills in the area of academic German. Apart from refreshing grammar relevant to academic German, the course also covers typical vocabulary as well as adequate formulation. Through practical tips and exercises, the course helps students learn reading and writing strategies competently.

Linguistically, the focus is on communication and a confident use of the German language, adapted to specific situations. Grammatical knowledge and technical language aspects are practised and developed as appropriate to the upper level.
The course amounts to 25 hours per week (17 hours of general language and eight hours of technical language).

The rent for a room in a dormitory is 270 EUR to 370 EUR. The rent for a room with a host family is 300 EUR, plus a deposit of 50 EUR.

Description of social and leisure programme

We offer our participants a varied leisure programme. For example, they can discover Bielefeld and the surrounding area, cook meals together, learn more about the German football culture (including a visit to the stadium of Arminia Bielefeld), watch current German films, or make use of the university's sports programme. The German course includes two excursions, e.g. to Bonn and Münster.
